A GREAT HOLIDAY

a magnific base to discover hidden treasures

An idyllic location to relax and erase the accumulated stress. As JOHN LUBBOCK says, "Rest is not laziness, and lying on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of the water or watching the clouds float in the sky is certainly not a waste of time." Sit at the table of a cafe on the boulevard, you'll admire the slightly rippling water of the lake, furrowed by sailboats, with a clouded mind while you are recharging your batteries. But soon you'll visit Rome with its monument, only 20 mins far, or discover the TUSCIA, historically the extreme southern part of Etruria, the land inhabited by the Etruscans, the richest and most advanced pre-Roman civilization starting from the town of Sutri, only 10 min far, the gate of Etruria. North of Rome, following the national road “Cassia”, today “Tuscia” is a term used to describe the northern part of Lazio and approximates to the present day province of Viterbo. Bordered to the north by Tuscany and to the east by Umbria, the Tuscia also boasts 40 kilometers of coastline lapped by the Tyrrhenian sea. This is the cradle of the Etruscans but not only: also the Romans let their signs and later and during the Renaissance, some Popes born in this land built palaces, churches and villas with Italian gardens, significant signs of their power and magnificence. A great surprices for the wayfarer will be the green territory North of Rome, a land "off the beaten tracks", mostly plain and hilly, with 5 beautiful and umpolluted lakes of volcanic origins. In the district of Viterbo, splendid exemples of Medieval towns and villages such as Sutri, Caprarola, Ronciglione and, close to Rome, Trevignano and Anguillara on the coat of the Bracciano lake; Renaissance Palaces with beautiful Italian gardens such as the Farnese palace of Caprarola and villa Lante of Bagnaia; The mountainous district of Rieti, land of imposing Abbeys. BEACH
BRACCIANO LAKE
On the shores of Lake Bracciano there are three cities: Bracciano, Trevignano and Anguillara.

Town of Bracciano
The Castello Orsini-Odescalchi, headquarters of the Orsini family and later of the Odescalchi, overlooking the city of Bracciano. Perfectly preserved, today maintains its grandeur, is used to make films, weddings and meetings, and can be visited. Trevignano and Anguillara are two fishing villages, become since the 90 destination for retirees who have moved to enjoy the particularly mild and pleasant climate and tranquility offered by the lake. Boulevards and squares of the lake invite you to relax.

ANGUILLARA

Anguillara Sabazia is a medieval village situated on a promontory that advances towards the center of the lake.
Its name has nothing to do with eels (anguilla), but seems to derive from the Roman villa "Angularia", because it was built right where the coast forms a right angle.

The village was fief of the Anguillara family until 1488, when the castle was bought by Gentil Virginio Orsini of Aragon, who in 1693 ceded Anguillara and Trevignano to the Grillo family and Bracciano to the Odescalchi family.

Anguillara
is today a particularly popular tourist destination for Romans and foreigners, not only for the weekend but also for long stays.
The town, situated on the lake in a picturesque position, has kept its medieval layout. The main course runs through it in a straight line going up to the Collegiate (church of the Assumption). Access is guarded by a 16th century door surmounted by a clock. On the left the small square widens towards the belvedere embellished by the Fontana delle Anguille, on the right there is the sixteenth-century Palazzo Baronale, seat of the Municipality. The town, situated on the lake in a picturesque position, has kept its medieval layout in the center. Behind the palace rise the ramparts of the medieval tower. The church of the Assunta, from whose terrace there is a splendid panoramic view of the lake, overlooks the historic center. Inside, a valuable painting of the Assumption of 1592, by Girolamo Muziano and a Madonna and child that every September 8 is carried in procession through the streets of Anguillara to the church of the Madonna delle Grazie on the lakefront. In the lower part of the village there is the church of San Biagio, Patron Saint of the city. Not far from the historic center is the church of San Francesco, which houses interesting 15th-century frescoes. Near Anguillara are the remains of several Roman villas. Finally, it should be remembered that in the 1990s an extraordinary archaeological discovery was made on the seabed with the discovery of a Neolithic village dating back to 5500 BC, the oldest settlement on the river so far discovered in Western Europe. Among the numerous finds, now preserved in the National Prehistoric Ethnographic Museum “L. Pigorini ”of Rome, a pirogue over 10 meters long carved into a single oak trunk.
