SHORT AND DAILY EXCURSIONS

WORTH TO BE SEEN
Lazio Region
The Lazio region has about 5.9 million inhabitants, of which 2.9 million in Rome, but 4.4 million in the metropolitan area of ROME.

This means that the largest part of the population live or works there living in the mild countryside, in a ray of 40 km from downtown.

200 km about long and 100 large, the Region is located between Tuscany and Umbria to the North, Abruzzo to the East and Campania (the region of Naples) to the south, along the Tyrrhenian coast of Central Italy.
Rome is just in the center, well connected by highways and railway with the entire periphery in a maximum of one hour’s journey.

Very mild clima, from Rome to the South never under 5° Celsius all year round, to forget the coat and raincoat in mothballs. A little cooler to the North and North East

The whole Region is rich of surprises and well kept secrets, a land "off the beaten tracks" a sequence of different areas to landscape, culture, origins, history, customs and people from the northern border till the southern.
The northern part was the cradle of the Etruscans and, after the Roman domination, land of origin of some Popes that let significant signs of their power and magnificence.
A great surprices for the wayfarer will be the green territory North of Rome, mostly plain and hilly, with 5 beautiful and umpolluted lakes of volcanic origins.

In the district of Viterbo, splendid exemples of Medieval towns and villages such as Sutri, Caprarola, Ronciglione and, close to Rome, Trevignano and Anguillara on the coast of the Bracciano lake; Renaissance Palaces with beautiful Italian gardens such as the Farnese palace of Caprarola and villa Lante of Bagnaia.

The mountainous district of Rieti, land of imposing Abbeys and finally the splendid sandy and bare rocky beaches running in the South from Terracina to the border of Campania (the Region of Naples).

The Backbone of the territory of South Latium is the Via Appia, one of the seven roads built by the Romans to conquer and keep quiet their Empire.
Today two better roads have been built to join Naples and the South from Rome: the highway, on the back of the Appia road, far from the sea, touching the industrial towns of Frosinone and Cassino, and the via Pontina running seaside or in little distance from the coast of Latium, to touch Latina and Sabaudia, San Felice Circeo and Terracina, then changing name to Via Flacca - this too built by the Romans to reach their preferred holiday resorts - passing through Sperlonga, Gaeta, Formia, with branches to Itri and Fondi. More than a hundred km of rattling fine and white sandy beaches, quite all with umpolluted sea waters, some fragments with striking mountains sharply falling into the sea to form gorgeous inlets.
Fish trattorias, good wine production, buffalo mozzarella and good cheese will not be trivial for your brief leisure.

A few km far from the Via Appia, in the midland, on the foot or in mid of the mountain chains Lepini and Aurunci the time stopped to the time past, in Monasteries and ancient peasant villages.

The South
, in large part swampy till the beginning of the 20th Century, was inhabited only on the hills close to Rome, the so called Castelli Romani (Roman Castles), all remaining lands being very poor and insalubrious, except the immediate coast.

In general the whole Lazio was in the past time a poor land scarcely productive except the extreme Northern part, but Rome, the Aeternal city let the whole Region being the centre of the Roman Empire.

Today the Vatican and Rome make of Lazio a favourite first destination of the tourists that, after visiting Rome, move to Tuscany and other destinations in Italy.
